Expat stories!

Tell us a little about yourself,

Where do you live now, and how long have you been there?

I am currently living in Singapore and have been here for almost 6 years.

What do you love about where you live now?

If you have to live with someone during a global pandemic, then Singapore is a good choice. The pandemic has been well managed, and I’ve felt safe throughout the last 18 months. I love Singapore’s diversity, wonderful public space and an amazing variety of food. In non-covid times, it is a great place to travel from. I used to joke that it was almost worth living in Singapore just for Changi airport (I miss that place)

SingaporeHave you lived anywhere else?

I spent a year In Switzerland as an exchange student when I was 16.

Where are you from originally?

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, and a few years ago, my husband found himself doing an Asia Pacific role with an IT company with lots of travel. We decided it was time to move up here. We’d had a few holidays here and in other parts of S.E. Asia, and as intrepid travellers, we jumped at the chance to live in another country.

Has 2020 Changed you? If so, how?

I have realised just how much I love travelling and exploring new places and people. I can’t wait to return to travel and promise that I will never, ever take it for granted.

How has being an expat changed you?

I think the expat experience broadens your outlook on the world. You have the opportunity to meet people from all parts of the globe. The other thing I really love is that you are able to try new things as a beginner. Since being in Singapore, I learnt Chinese Calligraphy, quilting and local and regional cooking.

What are you working on now?

A few years ago, I completed a PhD in the area of young children’s spirituality, and I have just released a book called ‘Unplugged: how to disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other. It is aimed at providing support and resources for parents as they navigate this very connected world with their children.
