Thinking of moving to Australia? Whether you’re planning to live there for a few months or a permanent move, it’s worth considering a few tips to help make your move successful.

Decide where in Australia
First, you need to consider where you’d like to live in Australia. Your decision will likely depend on the type of job you’re looking for and the lifestyle you’re looking to live. Sydney and Melbourne have the most significant diversity of positions and are ideal for those eager to experience the hustle and bustle of a city. On the other hand, the likes of Cairns are more laid back and better suited for those yearning for the tropical heat or wanting to work with animals or outdoor activities.Â
Understand the cost of living
The cost of living is generally much more expensive in Australia than in many other countries. You may find that you have to make some sacrifices to afford to live in this country – make sure that you’re willing to make these sacrifices. Houses may be out of the question if you’re eager to live somewhere central, but new apartments could still be an option. It would help if you weighed up whether you need a car or whether you can get by on public transport (many of Australia’s cities have affordable public transport systems). This guide offers some more tips for saving money in Australia.Â
Save up some cash to bring out.
It’s worth having some savings to help support you while in Australia. If your job doesn’t work out or you’re unable to find accommodation as quickly as you’d hoped, these savings will provide you with something to fall back on. Of course, it’s up to you whether you convert these savings to Australian dollars straight away – ideally, you should have some money converted to spend until your first paycheque.Â
Consider securing a job before you arrive.
You’ll need a job already lined up if you plan to apply for a temporary work visa. Consider sending out applications early to see if you can secure something before you fly out. You can conduct interviews over the phone or via video call.Â
Choose the correct visa.
Australia has a few different visas. Make sure that you choose the right one. A popular option is a temporary work visa, which allows skilled workers to stay in Australia for up to four years, providing that an approved Australian employer sponsors them. Other visas may be better suited to different purposes, such as long-term travel or living with a spouse. The visa application process can vary in all cases. Â
Decide when to secure accommodation.
You can start looking for a home to live in before you move, or you can move out and stay in a hotel for a while until you’ve found a home. The former option could allow you to move straight into your home. In contrast, the latter option could allow you to view properties physically before signing any contracts rather than relying on virtual viewings.Â
Know when to book your flight
Because of Australia’s isolated location, the only way to get there is usually by boat or air. Flights are the most convenient option for many people and can often be long-haul. Such flights can be expensive, but you may be able to reduce the cost by thinking carefully about when you book them. Weekdays are typically cheaper to fly out on than weekends. You can also save money by booking far in advance or by booking at the last minute.Â
Allow time to adjust.
Ideally, you don’t want to be arriving and then going to work the very next day. However, you’ll need time to get over the jet lag and settle into your new home. Therefore, you should allow at least a week before starting a job.Â
