A situation that the effects of this pandemic have exacerbated. If you feel overwhelmed and unable to keep up with expectations, prioritize your mental health needs before your business.

Physical symptoms are described as being overly tired, constantly ill (a sign of a compromised immune system), experiencing tension headaches or muscle pain, or having trouble sleeping. You may also feel depressed, anxious, or suffer panic attacks.

As Zenbusiness points out, vacations proved to be the most effective way to relieve stress for managers. However, having a good game plan for your business is the key to success.

Prepare Your Support Team.

Assign employees specific responsibilities and let those employees know what is expected of them. Create a file for your team members that contains: 

  • Important contacts and their telephone numbers. 
  • Passwords. 
  • Essential procedures and information.
  • Instructions include how to turn on computers/ what to do if the internet goes down/ who to call If the roof leaks.
  • Details on when to contact you and what comprises an emergency.
  • Do a trial run – take a day off in advance and let your team get on with it.

Plan Your Break Around Slow Periods

If your business ebbs and flows, take your vacation at slow periods. Never take a vacation during a critical phase of your business, such as a product launch or website revamp. Also, be prepared to take a last-minute vacation (holiday often comes with fantastic pricing deals). If you spot a gap in your schedule, then grab the opportunity to get away, even if it is just for a long weekend.

Let Clients Know You Are Away 

It is a matter of respect and consideration for your clients that you inform them you will be absent from the business. Let clients know who is responsible for their needs in your absence. If you plan to check in each day, then let them know what hours you are contactable and only to call in an emergency.

Decide How Connected You Will Be

If you find the idea of completely clocking out causes you more stress, then allow yourself a finite amount of time each day to check work issues. Checking in each day can reassure you that everything is running smoothly and make the prospect of an overflowing inbox less intimidating. Additionally, make sure you set a time limit for working each day and stick to it. For example, consider taking just one hour every morning to check up on issues and speak to clients. Set the time limit in advance and stick to it. 

Burning out helps no one. Instead, your customers, clients, employees, and family will benefit from a relaxed, focused employer. Looking after your mental health is the responsible thing to do. Taking a vacation is a proven stress reliever, one that allows you to reset and head back to business recharged and inspired.
